Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\"Hond\u00f3n<\/p>\n

Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes, is a Spanish town and municipality located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the region of Vinalop\u00f3 Medio, in the Valencian Community. It has 1132 inhabitants, has an area of 12.6 km\u00b2 and its climate is arid Mediterranean. It is located at 415 meters above sea level and 27 km from Elche and 45 km from Alicante.<\/p>\n

Brief History of Hondon de Frailes:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes <\/strong>a\u00a01500<\/strong><\/p>\n

With reliable evidence of having been occupied a small part of the territory in Roman times during the I-IV centuries AD. C., it is at the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth when we glimpse the first news that refer to the municipality, obtaining D. Jaime de Sant\u00e1n, lord of Redov\u00e1n and Baile General de Orihuela the concession by the council, of the “grace of the Fond\u00f3n” in 1498, annexing these lands to the Lordship of Redov\u00e1n, which he himself had founded a few years before.<\/p>\n

De 1500 a 1600<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because of the crisis that affected the Valencian nobility in the sixteenth century, the Lordship of Redov\u00e1n was seized from D. Diego de Sant\u00e1ngel in 1579 by Felipe II, being taken to public auction on different occasions, without anyone exercising the purchase of it.<\/p>\n

De 1600 a 1800<\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 16, 1614, D. Jer\u00f3nimo de Rocamora, one of the first interested in exercising the right to purchase the lordship, met with the inhabitants of Redov\u00e1n, with the intention of making effective the property rights, drafting the agreements by which to grant the first town charter of the municipality. Despite granting the town charter, D. Jer\u00f3nimo de Rocamora will not achieve his purpose of taking over the lordship, since it will finally be bought for the amount of 12,000 pounds by the Dominican Order of the Illustrious College of Preachers of Orihuela, taking possession of it on January 12, 1616.Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes will remain under the intendency of the College of Preachers for the next two centuries.<\/p>\n

From 1800 to the present<\/strong><\/p>\n

The definitive confiscation promoted by the liberal government of Isabel II, more specifically, the one carried out by Juan \u00c1lvarez Mendiz\u00e1bal in 1836, caused the dispossession of the property of the lordship of Redov\u00e1n to the Religious order, passing Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes to be constituted as a hamlet administratively dependent on the City of Redov\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

This situation of dependency relative to the municipality of Redov\u00e1n would not last long. At the end of the decade of the thirties, the residents of Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes would raise a representation to the Hon. Diputaci\u00f3n de Alicante so that their claims were “protected”, which consisted of the segregation of the municipality of Redov\u00e1n and its subsequent incorporation into the City Council of Novelda (closer and better communicated); or that they were granted segregation and the subsequent power to establish themselves as a City Council<\/p>\n

Independent of another municipality. However, and to everyone’s surprise, the Queen Governor resolved by office of December 18, 1839, “that the town of the Ondon of the friars, be segregated from the City of Redov\u00e1n, and be incorporated into that of the Ondon de las Nieves”. This annexation lasted in time until 1926, at which time the definitive segregation of the municipality was granted. During the course of the Spanish Civil War, the municipality was briefly renamed “Hond\u00f3n Libre”, returning to the original name of Hond\u00f3n de los Frailes once the armed conflict came to an end.<\/p>\n

A party full of acts, where there is no lack of music, nor fireworks. Attendance at the procession, the offering in honor of the Patron Saint, the wet races (known as “Las Calder\u00e1s”) and the illuminated races (traditionally “Carretillas”) are unavoidable.
