Pilar de la Horadada<\/b>\u00a0(Spanish pronunciation:\u00a0<\/small>[pi\u02c8la\u027e \u00f0e la o\u027ea\u02c8\u00f0a\u00f0a]<\/span>) is a town and district in the Province of Alicante, in the southeast of Spain. Located 66\u00a0km south of\u00a0Alicante<\/a>, the city is the southernmost of the\u00a0Valencian Community<\/a>, only 1\u00a0km north of the regional border (with the\u00a0Province of Murcia<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The town and its neighbouring villages (Pinar de Campoverde\u00a0and\u00a0Torre de la Horadada) are home to thousands of\u00a0British,\u00a0German\u00a0and northern European expatriates.\u00a0San Javier Airport\u00a0(Murcia) is within close proximity.<\/p>\n

The district boasts great ecological value, with an abundance of\u00a0hawthorn, globularia,\u00a0mastic,\u00a0Kermes Oak\u00a0and\u00a0chamaerops.<\/p>\n

There are many birds of prey to be found in the region, such as\u00a0peregrine falcons,\u00a0golden eagles,\u00a0European sparrowhawks\u00a0and\u00a0kestrels.<\/p>\n

The town has been the site of many battles because of its location at the historical frontier between two kingdoms: the Kingdom of Murcia (Castilla) and the Kingdom of Valencia. Pilar de la Horadada was a town with dry farms and few houses known as\u00a0Campo de la Horadada<\/b>. After various centuries of agricultural economy, its tourism breakthrough came with its independence from the\u00a0Orihuela\u00a0municipal district in 1986. Co-operative societies such as ‘Surinver’ and ‘Teresa Hermanos’ use many of the local fields for vegetable growing. Pilar de la Horadada lies between the sea and the mountains and has a Mediterranean climate.<\/p>\n
