It is situated in the\u00a0comarca<\/a><\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0Baix Vinalop\u00f3<\/a>, and lies at the foot of the hill range known locally as\u00a0Serra de Crevillent<\/a>. As of 2009, it has a total population of 28,609 inhabitants.<\/p>\n

The most important tourist places of the city is a museum with works of\u00a0Mariano Benlliure<\/a>, a Valencian\u00a0sculptor<\/a>. Also remarkable is its\u00a0Moors and Christians<\/a><\/i>\u00a0festival.<\/p>\n

Many of the agricultural areas, particularly El Realengo, contain ruins of prisons, ovens and torture houses used during\u00a0Francisco Franco<\/a>‘s reign and the\u00a0Spanish Civil War<\/a>\u00a0in the early 1900s.<\/p>\n

Integrated into the Bajo Vinalop\u00f3 region, it is located 35 kilometers from Alicante. The municipality is crossed by the Mediterranean highway (AP-7), which connects to the Mediterranean highway (A-7) that connects Alicante with Murcia. It is also crossed by the N-340 road between pK 704 and 711, by the N-325, which goes to Novelda, and by a local road connecting to Catral. The relief is characterized by the southern slope of the Sierra de Crevillente and the Vega del Segura in the south, where the Natural Park of El Hondo is located. The height varies between 838 meters in the mountains and 2 meters in the lagoons of the natural park. The village rises 130 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n
