It has an area of 23.5\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0(9.1\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) and a\u00a0<a title=\"Population density\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Population_density\">population density<\/a>\u00a0of 990 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,600\/sq\u00a0mi). The city lies at the foot of the\u00a0<a title=\"Penyal d'Ifac Natural Park\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penyal_d%27Ifac_Natural_Park\">Penyal d'Ifac Natural Park<\/a>.\r\n\r\nThe economy of Calpe Spain is based mainly on tourism and fishing. Many <a title=\"Iberians\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberians\">Iberian<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Ancient Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ancient_Rome\">Roman<\/a>\u00a0and Arab\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Archeological site\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archeological_site\">archeological sites<\/a>\u00a0exist in the town because of its strategic coastal location.\r\n\r\nThe\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Prime Meridian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prime_Meridian\">Prime Meridian<\/a> crosses Calpe Spain\r\n\r\nThere are some remains that testify the presence of inhabitants in the region of Calpe in prehistoric times; some remains date back to the Bronze Age. The first buildings were introduced by the Iberians, constructed on the higher grounds.\r\n\r\nThe\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Natural Park of Penyal d'Ifac\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_Park_of_Penyal_d%27Ifac\">Penyal d'Ifac<\/a>\u00a0(in Spanish\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach<\/i>) was the natural lookout for the inhabitants that lived in the surrounding areas. Another lookout was the Morro de Toix Mountain, from which the Mascarat Ravine, an essential passage along the coast, could be controlled. The area gained in importance during the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Roman conquest of Iberia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_conquest_of_Iberia\">Romanization<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a title=\"Iberian Peninsula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberian_Peninsula\">Iberian Peninsula<\/a>. The township's proximity to the sea favoured marine trade and fish factories. Evidence is at the historical site\u00a0<i>Els Banys de la Reina<\/i>\u00a0(the Queen's Baths).\r\n\r\nAfter\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Islamic conquest of Iberia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamic_conquest_of_Iberia\">the Arabs conquered Iberia<\/a>, they built a castle overlooking the Mascarat Ravine. When the area was conquered by the\u00a0<a title=\"Crown of Aragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_of_Aragon\">Crown of Aragon<\/a>, the Muslim administration was maintained: small townships set apart and protected by a castle or fortress. Therefore, the inhabitants of the region were dependent upon the Castle of Calpe.\r\n\r\nIn 1290, Calpe came under the control of the Aragonese admiral\u00a0<a title=\"Roger of Lauria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_of_Lauria\">Roger of Lauria<\/a>, who ordered for a village named Ifach to be built in the proximity of the Rock of Ifach. In 1359, the battle between the then monarch\u00a0<a title=\"Peter IV of Aragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_IV_of_Aragon\">Peter IV of Aragon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Peter I of Castile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_I_of_Castile\">Peter I of Castile<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a title=\"War of the Two Peters\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_the_Two_Peters\">War of the Two Peters<\/a>\u00a0caused the destruction of Ifac and a surge in the population of the\u00a0<i>Alqueria<\/i>\u00a0(from the Arabic\u00a0<i>Al-garya<\/i>, meaning the \"small town\"). This rural building, generally constructed on mountainsides, is of an austere nature and simple design. It is made up of one or two floors at the most, with just the one gallery.\r\n\r\nIn 1386, the administrative unit of the Castle of Calpe was divided into the towns currently known as\u00a0<a title=\"Benissa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benissa\">Benissa<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Teulada, Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teulada,_Spain\">Teulada<\/a>, Calpe, and Senija. The town was plundered by\u00a0<a title=\"Barbary pirates\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbary_pirates\">Barbary pirates<\/a>\u00a0in 1687. 290 townsfolk were captured and taken to Algeria, where they were imprisoned for five years, until their liberation in exchange for gold and the release of pirate prisoners. Then, the town had 18 houses inside the castle walls and some 350 inhabitants. In the 17th century, there was an increase in the population, which gave rise to the consolidation of Calpe.\r\n\r\nTowards the mid-18th century, several projects arose to build a new fortified wall around the township because by then, the increase in the population forced many inhabitants to live outside the protection of the existing walls. During the 19th century, the village developed towards the west. The basic axis of growth was along the route between Altea and Alicante.\r\n\r\nDuring the second half of the 19th century, the fishing industry began to take off throughout the region. Buildings, such as the Fisherman's Cooperative, were constructed and functioned alongside several existing factories dating from the end of the 18th century. These buildings, however, were not a nucleus of population dedicated to fishing activities.\r\n\r\nIn 1918, the\u00a0<i>El Saladar<\/i>\u00a0salt flats were cleaned up, and the production of salt could once again take place. Thanks to the technical innovations of the times, bigger fishing vessels were constructed. The first small hotels arose in the area surrounding\u00a0<i>Els banys de la Reina<\/i>\u00a0and the Rac\u00f3 Beach, and catered to the emerging middle classes. The summer tourist trade increased substantially with the construction of the Ifach Parador in 1935.\r\n\r\nBetween 1945 and the end of the 1950s, many holiday villas and small hotels were built to accommodate the flourishing summer tourist trade. The hotel trade in the region is located almost exclusively on the coastal area. During the second half of the 1960s, as happened along the rest of the\u00a0<a title=\"Costa Blanca\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Costa_Blanca\">Costa Blanca<\/a>, there was a tremendous boom in construction in Calpe because of political change and the emergence of tourism as a phenomenon of the masses.
