The climate of the Costa Blanca

haven klimaat van de Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca (“white coast”) is one of the most popular coastal areas in Spain and is located in the eastern part of the country in the region of Murcia. Costa Blanca covers a large part of the coast in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia. There are several large and small seaside resorts along the Costa Blanca coastline. Some of these places are very popular with winter visitors. The city of Benidorm is probably the best example of this. This seaside resort has become a symbol of mass tourism. The streets behind the beaches are lined with hotels and apartment complexes. In the summer holidays, Benidorm mainly attracts couples and families. In the winter, it is mainly the over-sixties who come here for the winter sun.

The Costa Blanca has a Mediterranean climate, with the least contrast in weather patterns of all Spain. Precipitation is relatively low throughout the year and the sun shines all months. Also in terms of temperatures there are few extremes to mention. Frost rarely occurs and extreme heat with temperatures of 40 degrees or higher is also rare in this part of the country. The mild, dry winters and the pleasantly warm and dry summers are caused by a Mediterranean climate, with the Mediterranean Sea having a warming effect on the region in the winter. This is reinforced by the presence of mountains and hills behind the Costa Blanca that retain the heat from the sea and keep the cold out of the interior in winter.
